THE CADET CHAPEL
Was built in 1910 and is primarily used for
Protestant services. It is of Gothic design and measures 200 feet long
and 72 feet wide. All of the windows are class gifts donated to the
chapel. Many windows have two dates on them, one for the class that
donated the window and the other for the class that graduated 100 years
prior. The chapel's organ has over 18,700 pipes, making it the largest
working church organ in the world.
Old Cadet Chapel and Cemetary
THE OLD CADET CHAPEL,completed in 1837, is an example of the Greek
Revival style of architecture popular in America during the 1830's.
Above the altar is the painting of "Peace and War" by Robert Walter
Weir, Professor of Drawing at West Point from 1883 to 1876. Imbedded on
the walls are black memorial tablets to the
Revolutionary War generals of the Continental Army and to West Point
graduates who died in the Mexican War. On the east side of the choir
loft is the tablet to General Benedict Arnold, a tribute to his service
to the nation during the invasion of Canada and at the Battle of
Saratoga; only his rank and date of birth appear on the tablet. The old
Chapel was previously located on the corner adjacent the library across
from the clock tower. It was moved to the present site in 1910 and has
continued to be used for church services.
West Point Museum
Among the list of things to see and do at
West Point is a trip to the West Point Museum. Located on South Post,
directly behind the Visitors' Center, the museum is the oldest and
largest museum in the U.S. Army.
Its collections include works of art, weapons, uniforms and memorabilia
that span the evolution of warfare to the present.
Officially opened by the Department of Defense in 1854, the museum was
designed as a place to display war trophies. Items from the defeat of
the British at Saratoga in 1777 are displayed here. The museum also
houses items from the Revolutionary War, the Mexican War and the Civil
War.
The West Point Museum is open to the public seven days a week from 10:30
a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Admission is free.
