Visit to Mohonk Mountain House Lake & Preserve, New Paltz, NY

Mohonk exists today solely because of the inspiration of Alfred and Albert Smiley.
The brothers purchased a parcel of land adjacent to a lake on top of the
Shawangunk Ridge and created what became the most important of the great
mountain resorts, Mohonk Mountain House.

Spend the morning touring this fabulous mountain preserve and it's grounds.   Hiking and carriage rides throughout the park are available. Please wear loose and comfortable clothing.

The legacy of this development today constitutes the three properties of the Mohonk Mountain House Resort, Mohonk Preserve and Minnewaska State Park Preserve.

In the 1960s the Smiley family created the Mohonk Preserve out of the majority of their land holdings to insure its continuing preservation and place the stewardship into the hands of like minded environmentalists. The Mohonk Preserve consists of over 4,000 acres of land and encompasses some of the most environmentally fragile and important parcels in lower New York. Unique ecosystems flourish atop the Shawangunk Ridge protected by the Preserve.

Lunch On-Site at the Mountain House, Mohonk Preserve, New Paltz, NY

Tour of the Rivendell Winery

Back in the 17th Century, Huguenots planted vines in the Valley and discovered a unique combination of soil, climate and sun that together makes for ideal grape growing conditions. They originally planted their vines on the hillsides of the Hudson Highlands and started a tradition of grapes and wine that continues to this day. The wine making industry in the Valley has survived through wars, revolutions, blights, bad weather and Prohibition to become one of the most innovative and diverse areas of viniferous cultivation in the nation. The broad expanse of the Hudson River serves a dual purpose. The flowing water helps keep the climate temperate, and the valley serves as a conduit for maritime breezes from the south. The gently sloping hills provide ideal sites for vineyards, some of which, like those owned by Rivendell, have been planted for centuries.

Tour of Adair Winery, New Paltz, NY

Owners Jim and Gloria Adair purchased a 200-year-old farm to house their winery, which occupies an old barn designated as a National Historic Landmark. What began as a hobby vineyard of 100 vines is now a business and way of life. Most Adair wines are made from locally grown grapes, such as Seyval Blanc, Foch, Ravat and Leon Millot. A Chardonnay and Baco Noir are also produced from grapes grown in the Finger Lakes region.
