Tour of Eleanor Roosevelt Mational Historic Site

Foreign heads of state who visited the president usually spent time at Hyde Park. After visiting the Roosevelt home, dignitaries such as Winston Churchill and Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands dined beside the outdoor fireplace at Val-Kill. Eleanor continued this tradition of informal gatherings outside her cottage long after Franklin died. As specified by his will, she turned the big house over to the U.S. Government but kept the Val-Kill complex for herself, living in the converted furniture factory, which she renamed Val-Kill Cottage, for 17 more years.

Tour of Franklin D. Roosevelt Museum and Library

The Franklin D. Roosevelt Library and Museum, located in Hyde Park, NY, is the nation's first Presidential Library and the only one ever used by a sitting President. The Library is one of ten Presidential Libraries administered by the National Archives and Records Administration of the United States Government. In addition to artifacts from the lives of President and Mrs. Roosevelt, this facility also houses Franklin Roosevelt's papers both as Governor of New York and President, as well as materials belonging to those who served in Albany and Washington.

The original building was erected with private contributions and opened to the general public in 1941. The two wings in memory of Eleanor Roosevelt were added in 1971, making this the only Presidential Library to have a section devoted to a First Lady. Eleanor Roosevelt's papers are also housed here.

During the year, the Library hosts a variety of activities and special events. On January 30th, we commemorate President Roosevelt's birthday with ceremonies and cake.

Tour of Vanderbilt Mansion Historical Site

By their grand scale, classical ornament, and look of permanence, the majestic homes of the late 19th century call to mind those of the European upper classes from times past. These were the dwellings of Americans who made fortunes from industry. Devoted at first to amassing large sums, the new millionaires eventually found that money was no longer enough. They wanted to live as though they
were heirs to centuries of wealth, to leave a lasting tribute to their achievements. The era when such a way of life was possible ended early in this century. Frederick Vanderbilt's mansion, along with its counterparts in Newport, Palm Beach, or elsewhere along the Hudson, can transport us briefly to an elegant world long past.
